Rapid and successful growth, turnover at the top, and a radical change in structure had employees in this mid-sized manufacturing business reeling. The company had outgrown the speed, intimacy and sense of community that had brought it such success. Leaders were losing touch with the day-to-day aspects of the business, while production employees lost touch with everything outside their immediate functional or operational area.
Between 1998 and 2003, Corporation for Positive Change designed and facilitated a multi-phased initiative to address the organization’s evolving needs. The initial culture transformation work – which took place over a period of 18 months – engaged 1000 employees, key customers and select suppliers in one-on-one Appreciative Interviews, followed by two 100-person Appreciative Inquiry summits. Subsequent activities included leadership training, annual strategic planning summits, and development of an AI-based quality improvement model.
As described in The Power of Appreciative Inquiry, the results of the work were stunning.
- Significant increases in production and productivity
- 100% increase in operations improvement suggestions
- Radical and sustained decreases in turnover
- Accelerated implementation of key organizational initiatives including an IT system migration, ISO 9001 registration, development of an on-campus corporate university
- Process innovations that saved $220K in equipment costs
